There are several reasons for the lack of heat, even if the thermostat is on. One typical culprit is a dirty filter.

A blocked or clogged filter will slow down the efficiency of your heating system. If the air filter is dirty, make sure to replace it. In general, you should replace a filter every two months.

More reasons for no heat include:

  • Dirty ignitor pilot
  • The thermostat is on the wrong setting
  • Battery issues
  • Your gas furnace’s gas valve isn’t open
  • The heater is cut off from the power switch

One way to know is if your condenser coils freeze when the heat is on or if the evaporator coils freeze when the cooling is on. Another way to know is if you hear or see any liquid dripping. The liquid is just water, but it is still a concern.

The last way to tell if the freon is low is if your mini split isn’t working well. If the mini split is not as efficient as it should be, it may need more freon.

You can try to turn off your furnace and reset the system. However, if you try this and the furnace is still not working, something else is at fault.

First, check the thermostat. Sometimes the wrong fan setting, such as ON, will push cold air between each heating cycle. You want the fan settings to be on AUTO instead.

If this doesn’t work, you can check the furnace air filter, ensuring it is clean.

Low refrigerant may result in your air not coming out cold. If there is a leak, contact professional help as soon as possible to avoid further damage.

Another reason for no cold air is clogged registers, also called vents. A blocked vent will restrict the airflow.

A faulty water heater may be lacking power or gas. If there’s no power interruption, check the thermostat. However, diagnosing thermostat problems is challenging, so contact experts for help.
